"Ensure that no family has to walk the path of mental illness alone."
Dr. Engelman’s relationship with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is built on over 25 years of dedicated service. Inspired by his own family’s lived experience with serious mental illness, he began volunteering with NAMI affiliates in 1998. His commitment to the cause culminated in his leadership at NAMI Wilmington, where he joined the Board in 2022, served as Board President through 2024, and was honored as an Emeritus Board Member in 2025.
A Dual Perspective
What distinguishes Dr. Engelman’s advocacy is his dual perspective as both a devoted father and a Medical Sociologist. After returning to academia at age 60 to earn his Ph.D., he focused his research specifically on the social dynamics of mental health.
In his leadership roles, he utilizes this academic expertise to strengthen NAMI’s support systems, working to bridge the critical gap between clinical treatment and the day-to-day reality of families navigating the mental health system.
NAMI Wilmington's Mission
NAMI Wilmington is dedicated to supporting individuals and families affected by mental illness through advocacy, free mental health resources, education programs, and peer-led support groups. The organization offers award-winning educational courses, online support communities, and outreach initiatives to improve mental health awareness and access to care.
Dr. Engelman’s work aligns seamlessly with this mission, offering his voice, his book, and his time to ensure support is available to those who need it most.
