ouglas J. Engelman serves as a unique example of lifelong learning and professional reinvention. After a decades-long career in marketing, Engelman made a pivot that few attempt: returning to university at the age of 60. Transitioning from the boardroom to the lecture hall, he earned his B.A., M.A., and finally his Ph.D. in Sociology in 2020 at the age of 71.

His autoethnography, A Boy Broken, a journey of a scholar and father through his sons mental illness, chronicles the experiences that sparked his career change. Written with the perspective of a loving father, through the analytical lens of a sociologist, the book examines the systemic and personal challenges families face when navigating a schizophrenia diagnosis. It serves as both a case study in resilience and a resource for families behind closed doors.

Doug Engelman is an active leader in the national mental health community. His work with The National Alliance on Mental Health spans over 25 years, currently acting as Board Emeritus for NAMI Wilmington, working to bridge the gap between clinical research and community support.

Now a Medical Sociologist and Professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW), Dr. Engelman applies his dual background in business and sociology to the study of mental health systems. He specializes in student wellness and is currently a lead investigator for "HawkAI," a university initiative exploring the use of Artificial Intelligence to support student academic success and mental health.
